Utoo Radio - July 12, 2024 - Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Garden River First Nation have filed a court application against lawyers for the Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund, claiming their fees were too high.

The Litigation Management Committee also filed a trust application to determine the legal status of the settlement money held by the fund.

The trustees approved $510 million in legal fees for its lawyers in April 2024, with the remaining funds coming from a $10 billion settlement for past annuities owed to beneficiaries.

The first step in the assessment application is to assess the lawyers' fees. The court is also asked to determine if the remaining settlement funds are assets of the fund, potentially requiring additional steps before distribution to beneficiaries.
