Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - April 5 2025 - The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) has identified 36 ridings across Canada where First Nations voters could influence federal election results.
The AFN identified areas where First Nations voters are higher than 2021's margin of victory or where First Nations people make up 10% or more of all eligible voters.
The AFN also highlighted ridings where new boundaries have resulted in increased First Nations voters.
Cara Currie Hall, a Cree from Montana First Nation, emphasized that voting in elections does not violate Indigenous rights but presents an opportunity to put forward requests.
Kaity Adams, a member of the Haudenosaunee and Onondaga Nation, argued that declaring herself a Canadian citizen by voting in the federal election will continue assimilation of Indigenous peoples.
Marc Merilainen, a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, believes that the Canadian government needs increased Indigenous representation and that the Indigenous vote can swing elections in key ridings.
