Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - September 14, 2024 - The Innu Nation is boycotting a Labrador economic development expo due to the inclusion and promotion of NunatuKavut, a group representing 6,000 self-identifying Inuit in south and central Labrador.
The Innu Nation claims that the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce failed to address Indigenous identity fraud when promoting Expo Labrador, and does not recognize NunatuKavut members as Indigenous.
The Innu Nation believes that NunatuKavut is using companies and businesspeople to promote their cause and is not recognized by the national organization Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
The Innu Nation has taken legal action to review a controversial memorandum of understanding between the federal government and the NunatuKavut community council, but that action was dismissed in June.
The Innu Nation calls for government and stakeholders to engage only with recognized Indigenous bodies and cut support with events like Expo Labrador that say "harm Innu by promoting fraudulent representation."
The NunatuKavut community council expressed its satisfaction with being part of the expo, but said it would not work with the NunatuKavut community council.
