Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - June 14, 2025 - Wildfires in northern Manitoba have forced 21,000 people out of their homes, forcing them to move to three different hotels in Winnipeg.
The Canadian Red Cross has provided accommodations for evacuees, including meals, but some are staying in campgrounds or private accommodations.
Pimicikamak officials say that the Red Cross has started assuming costs for those not staying in hotels arranged with the organization, but this response has been slow, leaving Pimicikamak to cover the costs in the meantime.
Ryan Castel, incident commander for Pimicikamak, said that some evacuees are skipping meals because they can't afford them.
Pimicikamak has been trying to get food to evacuees, footing the bill for a catering company to distribute meals for roughly 800 people, including Spence's family.
Pimicikamak is struggling to ensure everyone has a meal, with evacuees scattered throughout the city, including at 19 hotels.
