Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - June 14, 2025 - A Couchiching First Nation member created a poster board depicting Ontario Premier Doug Ford holding a torn copy of the James Bay Treaty in response to Bill 5, a controversial law aimed at speeding up growth and boosting the province's economic potential.
The bill will establish special economic zones, allowing projects like mining to bypass local and provincial rules.
The provincial government will consult First Nations during the summer to discuss the rules and special economic zones, such as the Ring of Fire in James Bay.
A protest outside Thunder Bay's Atikokan MPP Kevin Holland's office on Thursday against Bill 5 was held.
Indigenous people gathered outside Queen's Park on June 9 to demand the Ford government drop the bill. Two First Nations, Grassy Narrows First Nation and Neskantaga First Nation, have also spoken out against the new law.
The former chief of the Neskantaga First Nation, Chris Moonias, has asked the Ontario government to remove Bill 5.
