Utoo Radio with Other News Sources, May 30, 2024 Mexico's presidential election is set for Sunday, with a potential first-ever female president. Mexicans abroad can vote at Mexican consulates in San Francisco and San Jose.

The two leading candidates are Claudia Sheinbaum, backed by current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Xóchitl Gálvez, the opposition candidate.

This will be the first year eligible Mexican citizens can vote in person outside of Mexico.

Moreno Castillo, executive director of the Council of Mexican Federations in North America, expressed happiness at the growth in Mexican democracy.

The National Electoral Institute (INE) reports an increase in voter turnout, from 32,000 in 2006 to over 200,000 this year. COFEM has partnered with the INE to conduct outreach in local communities.

Moreno acknowledges the historical indifference to politics in Mexico but emphasizes the role of the youngest generation of voters, including those who are binational.
