Utoo Radio - June 20, 2024 - The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is happy that the Federal Court of Canada approved the Distribution Protocol for children who were taken away from their parents or grandparents who were caring for them. This is part of the $23 billion final settlement agreement that will compensate First Nations children and families who were discriminated against through the First Nations Child and Family Services Program and the narrow application of Jordan's Principle.

The Distribution Protocol spells out the requirements for people from the removed kid class and family class to be eligible for compensation and gives claimants a way to make their case.

It was made after talking to and working with First Nations people, technicians, and Deloitte, the company that handles pay. After the Distribution Protocol was approved, reimbursement will begin to be given out in about six months. This will help everyone who has been affected by the child welfare system.

Now, the Administrator (Deloitte) has six months to finish the claims process before people can start applying. Before the end of 2024, you should be able to get application forms.

For information about the settlement, please consult the Administrator website at www.fnchildclaims.ca.
