Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - June 25, 2024 - Team Nunavik-Quebec has been a guest member of the Arctic Winter Games International Committee (AWGIC) for many years.
On January 1, 2025, that will all change.
People on the team have been pushing for this to happen for years, and their desire keeps growing.
Now, the Kativik Regional Government has to pick two people to represent Team Nunavik-Quebec on the committee. One of them has to be from the government, and the other has to be from the business sector.
Team Sápmi is still the only guest member of the committee since Yamal was taken off after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. They have said they would like to host the games again in the future, but they haven't said they want to become a regular member.
It is Team Nunavik-Quebec's duty to host the games, but the hosts have already been chosen for 2032, so it will be at least ten years before the event comes to Nunavik.
The team will be working on the best way to host the games, taking into account that Nunavik is home to about 13,000 people and has the necessary facilities for hosting. From January 1, 2025, on, the team will be a regular part of the AWGIC.
