Utoo Radio with Other news Sources - July 8, 2024 - An indigenous institution in Manitoulin Island has been awaiting funding from the Ontario government for its Indigenous studies online course.
The University of Sudbury transferred its intellectual property in 2021, following Laurentian University's insolvency.
Kenjgewin Teg has been patiently waiting for funding to roll out the program, but has not received a favourable response.
The Ministry of Colleges and Universities is currently having discussions with Indigenous institutes, including long-term funding for the development and delivery of programming. Laurentian University announced the development of a four-year degree program on Indigenous studies, hoping to be open to students by fall 2025.
Kenjgewin Teg is concerned that Indigenous post-secondary institutions are not receiving the same support as other universities, which rely on government funding on top of internal funds.
The new program will be under the Faculty of Arts' existing budget.
