Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - September 19, 2024 - The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has issued a formal apology for the harms the medical profession has caused Indigenous Peoples.

The apology was made at a ceremony in Victoria, attended by representatives of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples.

CMA president Dr. Joss Reimer expressed deep shame for the "deplorable" racism, discrimination, and physical and psychological harms Indigenous people have faced due to the actions and inactions of physicians both historically and today.

The association conducted a review of its records regarding the treatment of Indigenous Peoples as part of its commitment to reconciliation.

Research revealed that the association contributed to systemically embedding and upholding anti-Indigenous racism in Canada, including the racially segregated "Indian hospital" system, medical experimentation on Indigenous children and adults, and the abduction and adoption of Indigenous children in the "Sixties Scoop."
