Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - October 1, 2024 - The Nunavut government is working on renaming 15 derogatory place names in the Old Squaw Islands, located 40 kilometers southeast of Iqaluit.

Madeleine d'Argencourt, an Inuk woman from Iqaluit, believes the change will take no more than a year and there is no guarantee it will be completed by 2025.

The process involves co-ordination with federal officials and community consultations.

The Inuit Heritage Trust has identified traditional place names to replace 11 of the derogatory names, while the others will bear generic names or no name at all.

The Inuit Heritage Trust has identified 15 places across the country that still officially have the s-word in its name.

The process is expected to take several years, with no guarantee that it will be completed by 2025.
