Norman Wells Braces For Higher Fuel Costs

Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - October 7, 2024 - Norman Wells, N.W.T., is facing a crisis situation with high fuel costs set to rise next week due to suppliers importing fuel through costly air barging.

Mayor Frank Pope expects heating oil prices to increase to around $5.50 per litre, while wholesale gasoline prices have risen from $2.38 to $4.60.

The high fuel prices are a result of disruptions to the town's supply chain, climate change, and low water levels on the Mackenzie River.

The rising costs are expected to affect the entire Sahtu region, with many businesses headquartered in Norman Wells and customers in smaller communities likely to see higher prices.

Mayors Pope and McNeely are requesting federal support to cover air freight costs for fuel coming into the community until winter road opens.
