Dawson City Refuses To Swear Allegiance

Utoo Radio wityh Other News Sources - November 20, 2024 - Yukon's second-largest municipality, Dawson City, has been at a standstill since its newly elected mayor and council refused to pledge allegiance to King Charles during their swearing-in ceremony.

Stephen Johnson, the mayor-elect, said the council and four members refused to take Canada's official oath to the monarch on Nov. 5 due to the Crown's history with Indigenous populations.

The territory is reviewing the council's request to take an alternative to the Oath of Allegiance, which requires councillors to swear or affirm they will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III and his heirs and successors according to law.

Dawson City has a population of almost 2,400 and is known as the heart of the world-famous Klondike Gold Rush.

The territory is reviewing the council's request to swear a different oath, and the territory is reviewing the oath's progress and completion.
