Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - November 20, 2024 - Pic Mobert First Nation in northwestern Ontario has declared a state of emergency due to escalating safety concerns around gang activity.

The First Nation, which is served by the Anishinabek Police Service and Marathon detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, has been impacted by a series of violent incidents, inhumane delays in emergency response, and the unchecked presence of organized crime.

The community, which is between 350 and 400 people, is experiencing a crisis in mental health, social issues, addictions, and a lack of policing.

The First Nation is asking the province for a commitment to adequate police funding and three key requests: more investments in detox, treatment, and aftercare, and more equitable wraparound social services.

The First Nation has four dedicated officers and wants to see their presence doubled. The First Nation has three recent incidents that prompted the declaration of the state of emergency.
