Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - January 8, 2025 - Crystal Gail Fraser, an associate professor at the University of Alberta, has published a book detailing the experiences of Northern Indigenous people at residential schools, particularly in Grollier Hall and Stringer Hall in Inuvik, New Westminster, Canada.
The book aims to demystify the experiences of survivors and promote nation-building and sovereignty.
Fraser conducted 75 interviews with survivors, who face personal challenges and the need for more discussion on the issues affecting them.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued a report in 2015 on the Inuit and Northern experience of residential schools, stating that the federal government initially resisted opening schools in the North due to limited economic development opportunities.
The book highlights the challenges faced by survivors, including a lack of local resources and the need for more funding to promote reconciliation.
