Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - January 14, 2025 - Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste has announced his interest in becoming the Liberal Party of Canada's next leader and the country's first Indigenous prime minister.
Battiste, who was elected in 2019, has received support from Indigenous leaders and other Canadians.
He is laying the groundwork for an exploratory team to launch the first campaign by an Indigenous candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada and to be the next Prime Minister of Canada.
Battiste was the first Mi'kmaw person elected to the House of Commons and has served as chair of the Liberal Indigenous caucus for several years.
The party has set the entrance fee for candidates at $350,000, which will be paid in installments.
Battiste urged prospective supporters to register and consider supporting his campaign, evoking the names of past and current leaders who made history themselves.
