New National Registry Launched

Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - January 14, 2025 - A new national registry aims to reveal the extent of forced and coerced sterilization of Indigenous women across Canada.

The non-profit Survivor Circle for Reproductive Justice, formed in 2023, supports survivors and advocates for reproductive justice for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis across provinces and territories.

The registry aims to connect with as many survivors as possible and help expose the vulnerability of Indigenous women in the North to racism within the healthcare system.

However, Steven Cooper, an Edmonton-based lawyer specializing in Indigenous law, believes that forced sterilization often goes unreported or survivors may not realize it happened to them.

Cooper believes that survivors speaking out will help reveal the extent of the problem and that survivors finding strength in numbers will help them.

As part of building the national registry, Indigenous sterilization survivors can apply for a healing fund to help pay for grief counselling, therapy, or reproductive technology.
