First Nation Proving Oral History Through Archaeology

Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - March 2, 2025 - Chipewyan Prairie First Nation has been participating in archaeological digs in its territory for several years, proving the community's history.

Recently, the Dene community hosted a field school, allowing participants to learn hands-on archaeology, excavation, and processing artifacts.

The process was particularly meaningful for nearby communities, as they have a connection to land and its history.

Non-Indigenous archaeologists like Ave Dersch and William Wadsworth, who led the field school, draw on Indigenous knowledge to interpret findings for their communities.

Eldon Yellowhorn, an archaeologist and professor of Indigenous Studies at Simon Fraser University, hopes that more Indigenous people will go to university and become archaeologists who can make valid claims based on their research and cultural knowledge.
