Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - March 5, 2025 - Four members of the Racette family are suing Little Black Bear First Nation, alleging discrimination and seeking a declaration that they have a right to be part of any treaty settlements.

The family, who received their treaty status in 2012, claims they are not treated as members and are not allowed to vote or receive funding from the band.

They seek an injunction to stop the band's Treaty 4 agricultural benefits settlement until their claim can be heard.

The First Nations controls its own membership list and can determine who is recognized as a member based on its own set of criteria.

The decision dismissing the injunction application urged Little Black Bear to consider the plaintiffs' membership applications and emphasize their dislocation from their community due to Canada's colonial practices.
