Ontario Chiefs Tell Resource Companies Not to Work With MNO

Utoo Radio with Other News Sources - March 5, 2025 - Ontario First Nation leaders have demanded that resource companies not negotiate with the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO), claiming they have no legitimate right to be consulted on projects on their lands or to benefit from such projects.

The MNO rejects this allegation, and the Wabun Tribal Council is challenging the policy in court.

The battle has pitted the Chiefs of Ontario and the Manitoba Métis Federation against the Ontario Métis group, a battle the latter characterizes as politically motivated.

The provincial secretary with the Métis Nation of Ontario rejected allegations that the group's claims are illegitimate. The Ontario government has not provided more guidance on industry's obligations to the Métis organization.
